SKILLED WORKERS

Canada values skilled immigrants who can effectively compete and succeed in the country's knowledge-based economy. Skilled worker immigrants are chosen for their ability to become successfully established in Canada. The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act introduces new selection criteria with more emphasis on applicants' education and such flexible skills as language rather than on their intended occupation.

Requirements for Skilled Workers

Skilled Worker is the most popular category for immigration to Canada. In order to have a good chance of success under the Skilled Worker category you have to meet the following criteria:

  • Obtain 67 points out of a possible 100 points on your assessment
  • Have at least one year of full-time (37.5 hours per week or more) work experience within the past ten (10) years in one of the occupations listed in either Skill Type 0 or Skill Level A or B of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  • Have post-secondary education
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 49
  • Speak, read and write fluently in the English and/or French language
  • Have a relative who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who resides in Canada
  • Have enough money to support themselves and their dependants as they settle in Canada
  • Be in good health
  • Have no criminal record

Selection Grid for Skilled Workers

Skilled workers are people whose education, language ability and skilled work experience will enable them to become successfully established in Canada. They are assessed according to a point system which evaluates their ability to adapt to the Canadian economy. There are six selection criteria.
